Just a quick reminder that the deadline for sending in your Planning and Budgeting paperwork is approaching. This should be sent directly to your Regional Coordinator no later than the 23 May.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology has won gold and bronze awards for its Faraday 08 - Technology for Life campaign. The awards were presented by the International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) on Friday 4 April.
Gold was awarded to the IET in the education category for its documentary film Faraday 08 - Technology for Life. Judges said, "It was a powerful, educational and beautifully executed film where complex subjects were transformed into riveting viewing to make engineering truly glamorous."
In the e-learning category, bronze was awarded for the IET Faraday 08 website - "an inspiring collection of interactive and traditional media, covering a wide range of topics, resulting in a very engaging and informative presentation."
Jan Stapleton, IET Manager, Education 5-19, said, "We're very pleased to win these awards. Bringing engineering and technology to life to a teenage audience can be challenging. The judges' use of words in their citations - powerful, riveting, glamorous - shows that, with the help of the right creative team, anything is possible!"
The IVCA Awards are internationally recognised benchmarks for effective communications. They are judged by over 130 jury members who are leading practitioners within the communication industry, business, the Arts, Government and related sectors. The programmes were produced with the IET by Radley Yeldar with EdComs. There was a specific brief to create a resource around the theme of 'engineering in health' which would bring engineers and technologies to life for a demanding teenage audience.
The IET is working in partnership with the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (PITCOM) and e-skills UK to run a national competition for pupils aged 9-11.
'Make IT Happen' encourages primary pupils to use technology such as audio-visual materials, web pages or interactive posters to describe how they would improve an aspect of their local community. The issues identified are required to be relevant to schools e.g. tackling bullying, helping to improve the local environment or supporting the local community.
Judges will be looking for student-led entries which show initiative and imagination and make the most of technology skills. Generous cash prizes will be available for the winning school from each of the English Regions and Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. In addition, three overall winners will be selected. Winning schools will be presented with their prizes at a ceremony at The Houses of Parliament in October.
The closing date is 13 July and full details can be found at: www.cc4g.net/makeithappen/
Members are requested to make schools in their area aware of the competition and encourage them to submit entries.
Anthony Rose, Head of Digital Media Technology at the BBC, will be giving a talk on his involvement with the BBC iPlayer project including his motivation for joining the BBC, the challenges that have been overcome and the problems that lie ahead for the next generation of the BBC iPlayer.
The event will take place at 6pm on Tuesday 20 May at Savoy Place and will be streamed live via IET.tv. Registration for the event is now open and can be accessed online at www.theiet.org/ypevent
We are also looking for Local Networks who are willing to hold satellite events for this lecture - please contact your Regional Coordinator for more information.
Catalyst gives an overview of some of the work the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) has been doing to promote engineering and technology.
